Re: Migrating a cluster to a new SAN

Your EMC guys are dolts that don't know their own products ;-)

Open Migrator (aka DRU) works fine in a cluster...the only caveat is that
the destination disk on your DMX must be larger than the current Symm disk.
So you might want to take the opportunity to migrate your drives to larger
disks during this migration.

If you don't use the OM product, here are a couple of other possibilities:

- EMC can use SRDF to copy data from Symm to DMX. EMC also has other
utilities/options available...you might consider speaking to some different
EMC dudes that have done this type of stuff before. There is no need to
rebuild your cluster, but that's certainly one way of doing this, too.
- Add new disks to your existing cluster so that MSCS sees both your old SAN
and new SAN simultaneously. With the new disks added to the cluster, you can
use cluster admin to move your quorum to the new drives, and you can use
Exchange to move your databases to these new disks. Once the data is moved,
you can delete the old cluster resources and un-mask/zone the old SAN
devices. Optionally, you could use Robocopy or tape to copy/restore data
from old to new.
- I wouldn't recommend it but you could also backup all your data to tape,
disable cluster completely, make your SAN changes, restore from tape, change
disk signatures on the new disks to match the old, and then re-enable your
cluster.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
John

Dude, I'm not saying it won't work, I WANT this to work! Our EMC dudes
are
telling us it won't work. That's why I'm hoping you can give me some info
on
how to make this happen. We'd love to make our migration simple and
effective.

Be my hero!

Please give me more info on why you think this product won't work.
I have personally moved clusters to new resource using this.

thanks,
Edwin.

Well EMC is telling us we can't use that product for the cluster.
It's got
something to do with the disk offsets and stuff.

Honestly, the EMC folks aren't giving me a lot of confidence, which is
why
I'm on here asking.

Please contact your EMC contacts about a product called "EMC Open
Migrator"
it will allow you to move from Sym to DMX with the cluster online
(!)
(needs a couple of reboots, but you can manage this by moving groups
to an
appropriate node)

hope this helps

Yeah, I was vague, I know.

So how do you suggest doing this? It's moving from EMC Symmetrix
to EMC DMX
3.

Looking for any advice you can give, my man!

Yes, of course this is possible. Hard to give specifics due to
the lack of
details in your original post, but yes, it is possible. You're
just
introducing new volumes and making some changes (disk
signatures, etc); it's
not something that requires rebuilding the cluster.

Boys and girls of the forums...

Does anyone out there have any experience with migrating a
cluster from
one
SAN to a new one? We're facing this and our "experts"
involved with the
migration told us the only way this is happening is basically
rebuilding
the
cluster.

We just want to move data and the quorum.

If it matters, this is an Exchange cluster.
