Thanks John. Are you by any chance a USMA grad from 79?both

John,
You cannot add a 64-bit machine to a 32-bit cluster. This applies to
usingx64 and IA-64 processors.

One more clarification...
TechNet has an article at the following URL:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312387/en-us
The title is "The addition of a 64-bit node to a 32-bit cluster is not
supported"
Reading the 2nd Analyze phase error message (that one is always the
heartbreaker, isn't it?), one sees "A cluster can only be created
x86"nodes
that have the same processor architecture. Your cluster has a "Intel
again."processor and the node you attempted to add has a "Intel Itanium"processor.
Remove "64-bitnode.corporation.com" from the nodes list and try
that ITo
me this implies an obvious incompatiblity with the IA64 processor. However,
my plan is to use the x64 OS on a machine with XEON processors, whichretain
compatiblity with the x86 architecture. My sense is that this articledoes
NOT apply to my situation and I should be OK. I would love to hear
SQLam
right.
Thanks.

Yes. You can't cluster 32 and 64 bit systems together. The drivers

Hi Geoff,
To clarify, I will be using 32 bit SQL Server on both machines.
youonly
difference will be the OS's. Is this still a problem? If so, are

No can do. You can't cluster a 32-bit node with a 64-bit node.

2. Evict the other node from the cluster.
3. Add the new 6850 as the new second cluster node.
4. Install SQL Server on the new node and Failover to it.

I would like to keep the same instance names for the SQL server

Are there any gotcha's I need to be aware of? Any

Thanks very much for any advice.
