I've had success with this process:
1. IIS must be installed on server or install will fail.
2. Stop all IIS web sites. This will cause SUS to creat a new "SUS Web Site"
to install into. Otherwise it will install into the default web site or some
other running web site on port 80 and the MSCS servers will not sync up
available/approved updates properly.
3. This machine must own the shared drive for content to be stored on or
installation will fail.
4. Perform "Custom" SUS install. Select a shared cluster drive (R:\SUS\) for
both web site and content files.
5. On the SUS options page, specify a virtual server name (associated with
the shared drive used for content) for clients to use to locate this update
server
6. In IIS Manager edit the SUS web site properties to listen on the cluster
IP address, and on the advanced tab enter the virtual server name in the
"Host header value" field.
7. In order to manage SUS go to http://virtual_server/SUSadmin. (Note: In
Server 2003 you have to add http://virtual_server to the "local Intranet"
site list)
8. Fail over the group and repeat installation on other node. Ensure you use
ALL of the same settings during setup, and configuration of content shared
drive path, virtual server name, and IIS.
9. Create a new cluster resource for the Software Update Services
Synchronization (WUSyncService). This will ensure that only the owning node
attempts to update the content files.
