2003 NLB via proxy works, fails when not through proxy.

Maybe someone can shed some light on this, or give me some idea as to
what I can try to resolve this issue.
I have 2 w2003 servers that I setup as in NLB running a simple
website.
Both machines are connected to a hub, which is in turn uplinked to a
procurve switch. I was thinking that maybe we had a switch that was
doing layer 3 switching, which I read could be a problem, but I would
think that by using the hub first, this would omit the problem.
My laptop is on the same subnet as these machines. In addition our
ISA server is on the same subnet. When I go into IE and check the box
to use the ISA box as a proxy in the LAN settings section, then the
load balanced site works ok, but if I don't go through the ISA box,
the page doesn't come up right.
When I plug in my laptop into the hub that the 2 NLB servers are
plugged into everything works. If I plug my laptop into the procurve
switch, then it doesn't work once again.
The ISA box is no where near the other 2 servers or my laptop (it's on
another floor), so I can't understand why going through it works, when
using our normal network doesn't.
A few other notes: pinging is being NLB correctly, I and I turned off
HTTP keep alive on both IIS boxes.
