How does clustering assign multiple IP addresses?

This isn't so much to do with clustering per se but clustering makes use of
this capability. When a virtual server is created, a single adapter can be
bound to multiple IP addresses/masks. What underlying API calls are used to
accomplish this? Is there a limit to how many IP addresses can be bound to a
single adapter?
