I am helping a friend setup his new HP ML150 G6 server with Windows
2003. After the installation (and, all appears fine for the operating
system), he asked me if I could setup his two hard drives for
mirroring (RAID 1) so I opened up Computer Manager and went to Disk
Management. What I saw was:
2 hard drives : the first was partitioned into C and E when I
installed Windows 2003. He wanted a second partition to segregate
his data. But, then there were two other "misssing" dynamic drives
each the size of the drives that he has in his server.
He also has an Unallocated Dynamic drive.
What I think has happened is that prior to installing Windows 2003 he
had the 2 hard drives already in a RAID configuration by the
manufacturer....and, when I installed Windows 2003 it lost its
configuration.
He later indicated that he "believes" he was told that the server
came with Hardware Raid setup.
I am not sure what to do here. I'm pretty sure that you can not have
software RAID if there is Hardware RAID but he doesn't have any other
CD/DVD for the server that would allow me to setup hardware RAID nor
does he appear to have a separate utility partition on the hard drive
(of course, I could have destroyed it in the installation...don't
know for sure).
Can anyone give me some advice?
In addition to the other replies -
* Always configure your hardware RAID before installing your OS
* When you have hardware RAID you don't set up software RAID
* You can see your hardware RAID settings when you boot up and select the
option to go into the controller's BIOS
* You can install the mfr's system utilities after the OS install to view
the RAID config, etc, in the GUI
* Contact the manufacturer's tech support if you aren't sure what you've got
.
