Hello Paul Bergson [MVP-DS],
Thanks for this Paul. I always forget it. We are lucky in the moment that
our apps are not that crappy. :-)
Best regards

Meinolf,
We have some crappy apps (Or appliances) that will only allow entry of
an ip
address not a host name. I can feel his pain. Plus there are some
network
rules that also won't allow names. Not sure if this is his problem
but
slamming in a new dc is probably going to be easiest keeping the ip
address
the same.

Hello RC,
Don't know why you need the same ip address, anyway, add the new DC
to the domain with a new ip address(choose preferred DNS only the
existing DNS/DC), promote it to additional DC in the domain, make it
Global catalog server and DNS server. Let it replicate, check with
the support tools dcdiag /v, netdiag (copy it from 2003 DC, works
also on 2008) and repadmin /showrepl that everything is ok. Then
change the preferred DNS to itself.
Now change the old DC to a new free ip address, run ipconfig
/registerdns and restart the netlogon service. When DNS has changed
and replicated the change to the other DNS servers, change on the new
DC/DNS the addresses to the now free ip address and make the same
steps as before.
Best regards

I have a situation where I have a site with 1 DC. The current OS is
2003. I have the hardware to build a new DC for this site and want
to use 2008 but I need to retain the old IP address. Any thoughts
towards the best path to accomplish this? I have a couple ways I can
do this but would like to use the most efficient.
Scenario 1: Bring up the new 2008 DC in the current site. Give it a
static IP. DC promo the old 2003 DC for this site. Once it has been
removed change the IP on the new 2008 DC to match the old 2003 box.
Scenario2: DCPROMO down the 2003 DC. Make sure all lingering objects
have been removed. DCPROMO the new 2008 DC with the old IP address
Side note - none of the DC's in this site are FSMO holders
