I have a domain with 2 DC's running 2k3 SP2 and both are DC's. DC1 died and
I couldn't get anything to work including logging in. After a restore on my
drives array and checking all settings I can't figure out what the cause is.
Both are replicating properly, my DHCP has the right order of DNS settings,
both have forwarders setup, both have the gc on them and DC1 is the FSMO
holder for the domain.

As I was restarting the server after reloading the machine in safe mode
everything started working. I was lucky to rebuild the array and not lose
anything but still don't understand why the failover didn't work properly.
So any help on what to look at would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Failover, as been noted by Phillip and Jorge, does not exist per se as you've expected. However, depending on how DNS addresses are set on a client, and whether both DCs are GCs, may contribute for a client not being able to logon. I have no idea what you have because no configuration informaiton was supplied regarding ipconfigs, DCs, GCs, sites, # of locations, etc, other than your post saying no one can logon, it is difficult to ascertain anything. But one thing I can say that if a client cannot contact a GC or DC, it could at least have logged on using cached credentials. Since this didn't occur, makes me wonder further about how your DCs are setup, as well as DHCP DNS options.

But if you want **true** failover, use clustering.
