Re: Windows 98 in a Server 2003 Domain and trouble with shares

Actually, it is possible to do User-Level shares in Win98, which get their credentials from the Domain Server. That's how it's run at the moment. It's not the normal sharing that one does in Win98 like you're talking about.

While the shares probably aren't *necessary*, the guy who runs the lab has had it set up that way for quite a while. He's not keen to change things, I don't think. :/

Thanks for all of the help guys. I'll be checking into SMB Signing shortly.

But if SMB signing was involved, neither computer would work, at least not if they're on the same PDC. One does. Besides which, AFAIR SMB signing only affects access to server-hosted shares, giving the symptom that the share can be mapped-to from a 9x client, but appears empty.

It is more likely that the shares have different passwords.

As Richard mentioned, SMB signing needs to be disabled on each DC's Domain Controller policy, or in the Default Domain Controllers GPO on each domain, that you are allowing share access from a pre-Windows 2000 computer

FYI, You can disable SMB service signing in the following node of Default Domain Controllers policy on the domain controllers organizational unit:
Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Microsoft Network Server: Digitally sign communications (always)
