Hi Again everyone,

Now that I've got my shiny new Windows Server 2003 machine running a
Domain (in "Pre-Windows 2000 Compatibility mode"), I've got some Win98
machines I'd like to put a share on.

The trouble is that one Win98 machine is working great -- If I access
\\win98-a.university.edu from a computer, it lets me right in. If I
access \\win98-b.university.edu from the same computer, It prompts me
for a username/password.

The Win98 machines both look to the Domain for credentials. They both
have a share (d:\users shared as "users") to which I've given myself
the right permissions.

Both Win98 machines have had the Active Directory client installed.

It's been a while since I've worked with 98 and all, but I'm not
*that* dumb, haha. What sorts of things could I be missing? Could
this be resultant of a GPO on the Domain? Any tips on what to search
for?
Thanks,
J.R. Raith

As Richard mentioned, SMB signing needs to be disabled on each DC's Domain Controller policy, or in the Default Domain Controllers GPO on each domain, that you are allowing share access from a pre-Windows 2000 computer

FYI, You can disable SMB service signing in the following node of Default Domain Controllers policy on the domain controllers organizational unit:
Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options\Microsoft Network Server: Digitally sign communications (always)
