It sounds to me like you might be confusing the 2 technologies DFSR can.
provide. Namespace and backup. It sounds like you just want to replicate
branch data from the branch offices back to corporate for backup. In this
case the namespace really does not come into play. You would share out the
folders on the branch office server, users map their drives to the branch
office server and you would use DFSR to replicate the shared folder back to
corporate. Users don't need a namespace for this.
1) Can I place my shares on all my RODC and use DFS to replicate these
shares to the head office? for DR purposes.
Ok you are talking about using DFSR to replicate files back to the hub
server at corporate for backups.
2) If I decide to place my shared name space and shares at the head
office
and have them replicate to my branch offices RODC, what happens if the
link
to the head office goes down? there is only one link from all branch
to head
office. Will my shares still be available as my shared name space is
not?
I don't know why you would put the shares at the head office and have them
replicate to the branch office unless this was readonly data. Your backup
software is at corporate, your not backing up the branch office server where
the data is changed.
Now you are talking about replicating data from corporate to the branch
offices in the form of a namespace.
3) Can I place a shared name space on a RODC and will changes made to
these
shares on the RODC get replicated to the head office?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Now you are again talking about replicating back to the hub server for
backup.
Using a namespace allows you to combine a bunch of shares from multiple
servers so the users don't have to search all the servers to find the share.
DFSR for backup is just replication groups replicating data from remote
servers to a central server. Namespace is irrelavent here because users are
accessing the files on their local server, usually via mapped drive.
Which are you trying to do?

Hi,
Thanks for the quick response, I was just wondering what happens when the
Server that the DFS name space was created on is not available...how do
users
know where the name space is?
Thanks

Hello Elvis,
1. Yes
2. If you have shared folders on the RODC they are still available
3. read-only does not apply to the shared folders

Hi,
I have the following setup, a head office with writable AD DS DC and
my
branch offices have Read Only domain Controllers. I am planning on
implementing Ditributed File system accross the org as all DC's and
file and
print Servers are windows 2008. I have a few questions,
1) Can I place my shares on all my RODC and use DFS to replicate these
shares to the head office? for DR purposes.
2) If I decide to place my shared name space and shares at the head
office
and have them replicate to my branch offices RODC, what happens if the
link
to the head office goes down? there is only one link from all branch
to head
office. Will my shares still be available as my shared name space is
not?
3) Can I place a shared name space on a RODC and will changes made to
these
shares on the RODC get replicated to the head office?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Elvis
