RE: User Password Prompt

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hello Lee,

Maybe because they does not use XP? XP login is faster then the network link comes up. That's the problem.

Thank you for replying!!!

I took a look at "Computer Configuration\Administrative
Templates\System\Logon"

I enabled "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon"
after some tesitng. It seems to be working fine.

When working wiht other business's I have not come into contact with
this particular problem. Most of the settings have been left to the
default, with no issues like this one we are working on. Why am I
having to change this particular setting when I have not had to in the
past? Is there a deeper issue? I don't want to take care of the
symptom without taking care of the problem.

Thanks in advance

On a consistent basis our users have to reboot the computer twice to
get a password prompt before being able to change the password. This
happens even if we check "User must change password at next logon" in
AD. I don't know if there is a setting in AD or something else. I
have gone through AD and the settings look correct.

This occurs only on the password when it expires or when we set AD to
require the user to change the password at the next logon. The
password prompt screen will not pop-up when the user tries logging on
the first reboot. They will use their old password to login and have
access to the desktop, apps, and such. If the user however opens
Microsoft Outlook, Outlook will prompt the user for their
credentials. Of course, when the user tries using the old password
Outlook will continue to ask for their credentials. When the user
reboots a second time, the user's uses their credentials to logon
then the computer will prompt for a password change. We are not sure
why the computer has to be rebooted twice for this to take affect.
We thought that changing the password was an immediate action to be
verified against AD.

I have pulled up the rsop.msc, Under Computer Configuration>Windows
Settings>Security Settings>Local Policies>Security Options and the
setting is Not Defined.

The operating systems we are using are Windows XP Pro with SP2 and
SP3; we are still deploying SP3 as time permits. Our servers are
mostly Windows 2003 Standard with variations of R2 and SP1 and SP2.
We have one server with Server 2008 but it is a member server and for
testing.
