The environment is 40 workstations with Windows XP. We're installing
windows server 2003 w/ active directory cuz that's what the client
wants.

we need to transfer their user profiles to a share on the server.
But
we don't have local admin accounts on all the user's computers. So
Will
USMT work? or what's the best course of action. How are we to copy
their
profiles without local admin accts? that's something's that's
confusing
me. i'm basically on my own. my mgr will be setting up active
directory
(he's not very technical, so i'd like to help as much as i can. )
These
are the details he's given me. Not really enough info.

Never ever ever ever ever,..ever,...have someone who is "not very
technical"
setup Active Directory.

You *will* have local admin access because when the machine are joined
to
Active Directrory the Domain Admins Groups is automatically added to
the
Local Administrators Group.

The profiles are almost worthless because after the Domain is built
the
accounts are created in it,...and those accounts at the Domain level
will
have nothing to do with the local accounts.

i will have local admin access? so it is totally possible to copy the
profiles using USMT correct?

So basically when i get to the onsite location, the first thing i need
to do is create active directory via dcpromo and etc. after that wizard
completes. and active directory is in place with its domain.

we basically create an OU and and create two groups within it and maybe
create an admin group as well?

then go to each workstation and join them to the domain, by right
clicking my computer, properties, and then computername tab/ change to
join the domain? correct? after it's joined to the domain. i'll have
local admin rights on whatever pc i just joined? (is there any faster
way to join the pcs to the domain than going to each one by one?

after that we can start using USMT? But the question is how do you use
it and from where do you get that tool?
