I currently have a Windows 2003 native AD domain with a Windows 2008 x64 DC, Windows 2008 x86 DC and a Windows 2003 R2 SP2 x86 DC. The Windows 2008 x64 holds all the roles (Domain, Schema, PDC, RID, Infrastructure) and all three hold the global catalog role. All three are in different sites linked via VPN tunnels.

the Windows 2003 R2 SP2 machine was recently promoted to a DC. After promotion, Event IDs 1085 and 1091 appeared once (after an initial successful group policy application), followed by many event ID 1053s:

"Windows cannot determine the user or computer name. (The RPC server is unavailable. ). Group Policy processing aborted."

When the GPMC is invoked on the Windows 2003 DC, the SIDS appears instead of the actual machine names, users, groups, etc. Attempts to get successful application of group policy via gpupdate /sync are initially successful, then followed by event ID 1053 once again.

The solution mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823608/en-us (Event ID 1085 and 1091 issues) does not not solve the problem as my Windows 2003 is already SP2. Similarly http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823608/en-us (Event ID 1053) solution was not helpful.

If anyone has an idea regarding this issue please let me know.

Thanks in advance!
