The same thing happened dcpromo'ing it using it's original name, none of
the service records would register, so I though why not try a different
name? Changed it's name and all is now well, service records successfully
registere etc etc....mind boggling, something must be left in AD (and or)
DNS somewhere referencing this box.

Thanks for all the help guys but i don't believe I'm going to get to
the bottom of this one.

As suggested I'll dcpromo/forceremoval, perform a metadatcleanup friday
afternoon, dcpromo'ing the server back again saturday AM (plenty of
time for AD to replicate the changes out round our sites.)
