Re: System State

Dear Microsoft Newsgroup

I have a few questions about system Backup in windows server 2003 R2
and Windows server 2003 SBS

1. What part of the System State Backup contains a DCs SID?

2. Does the SID of the DC have to be the same for clients not to
notice a replaced server?

3. Where can I get a detailed document on what exactly is backed up
in the system state for windows 2003 and SBS 2003 besides the non
descript Registry, AD, COM etc

4. Can you sestore a system state of one hardware type to a different
hardware so that you can save time not having to redo a lost DC if
you do not have another DC in your network?

Thankyou for any replies in advance

Travis

Hi, Travis - in addition to the other replies, note that SBS does many
things differently. You should always post SBS questions in
m.p.windows.server.sbs, even if you also want to crosspost to the 'regular'
product newsgroups.

For SBS backups, you should use SBSBackup - it will ensure you have what you
need to do a full restore of your server.

Also, you might want to consider using a news client, such as Forte Agent,
Thunderbird, or even Outlook Express, rather than the pretty clunky web
interface to the newsgroups. It's a lot easier to do nearly everything that
way. You can mark messages to be watched, filter the views so you can see
replies to your posts easily, and search.

The Microsoft public news server is msnews.microsoft.com and you can
subscribe to as many groups as you like; no authentication is required.
