Hello all

I am putting together a basic procedure for upgrading the AD forest to AD
2008. Currently the AD forest is in Windows 2003 forest and domain mode.
All
Domain controllers are running windows 2003 sp2. We currently have one
forest
root domain and 2 child domains, i.e corp.domain.com=forest root
pqa.corp.domain.com=child and prp.corp.domain.com=child. We currently have
3
AD sites each site has 3 DC's. We also have one site link that connects
all
three sites together. All the DNS zones for all three domains are AD
integrated, I also have a copy of DNS zones running on one of the DC's in
the
forest root domain that are primary zones (non AD integrated) We also are
running Exchange 2003 sp2

My upgrade plan is below, please let me know if i am on target with this
and
if not provide advice where needed. Many Thanks in advance

1) Take a backup of two domain controllers in each domain in the forest-
(system state data)
2) Prepare AD Forest Schema. The AD schema must be updated from the server
holding the schema master role. Run adprep/ forestprep from the
installation
media. Wait for replication to complete
3) Prepare AD domain. Identify the domain infrastructure role in every
domain that will be upgraded. Run adprep /domainprep /gprep. Wait for
replication to complete
4) Record all the FSMO role holders in every domain that will be upgraded
5) Upgrade the OS on the DC holding the domain naming master role
6) Upgrade the OS on the DC holding the PDC emulator role
7) Continue upgrading the rest of the domain controllers in every domain
that will be upgraded
8) Once all the Domain Controllers are updated do a system state backup of
every DC
9) After upgrade run the AD test tools to check the health of AD
a) Repadmin.exe checks replication consistency and monitors inbound and
outbound replication partners
b) DCdiag.exe Diagnoses the state of the domain controllers in the forest.
Test for successful AD connectivity and functionality
c) NLTEST queries and checks the status of trusts
d) Dnscmd.exe provides the properties of the DNS servers, zones and SRV
records
e) Review Adprep.log provide detailed progress report of the forest and
domain
