Hello Alexyy,
What is not working when you try to upgrade, please post the complete error message. How many DC's do you have? If only one do NOT format it, you loose the complete domain. Also give some info about applications running on the DC you like to upgrade.
The easiest way is always to add an additional member server to the domain and promote it to DC, then make it GC/DNS server and move the 5 FSMO roles to it. If you have check with diagnostic tools, dcdiag /v, netdiag /v and repadmin /showrepl for errors you can start with demoting old DC's if needed. At lesat you should have 2 DC/DNS/GC in your domain for redundancy and failover.
Best regards
