Re: win 2003 to win 208 trust relationship problem

Hello Maurice,

You can try turning off the large send offload on the network card.

Hi, yes by default we always have NetBIOS over TCP enabled. I
installed WINS on the w2K8 server and set it to replicate with the
WINS on a W2K3 server. A push/Pull was initated and the database
filled up correctly. I set up a secondary zone in DNS for the W2K3
domain and that all set up ok too. I can now happikly validate trusts
in each direction and from either end. So, on the face of it, it all
should be working. But, on a workstation on the W2K3 domain if I open
the network up I can see the W2K8 domain name but cannot gain access
to it. On the W2K8 server if I open the network I cannot see any sign
of the W2K3 domain there.

On the W2K8 system I did managed to map a drive to \\server IP
address\folder with 'Connect using different username' - having done
that I can read/write files on the share ok.

This seems very reminiscent of a problem I came accross with a Vista
PC not being able to map a drive letter to a Buffalo NAS server when
using its name but mapping ok is the NAS IP address was used. I think
it was due to the LMcaompatbility level.

Hello Maurice,

Is NetBios over TCP/IP enabled on the 2008 on the NIC properties?
WINS you will find under the features not under the roles.

Hi, thanks for that I had suspected that the DNS would need setting
up correctly. I have done this and now from both ends if I go into
AD Domains & Trusts I can validate the trusts in each direction. So,
on the face of it the trusts now look ok. But, on the W2K3 domain I
can expand the network and see both domain names but when I try and
expand the w2K8 domain I get access denied. On the W2K8 system if I
expand the netword the W2K3 domain does not even show up at all.

I have checked WINS at the W2K3 end and that all looks ok, I don't
seem to be able to find where you can install WINS on W2K8 as it
doesn't show up on the list of installable roles.

Can you ping with ip address, computername and FQDN after DNS
setup?

My main domain is Server 2003(2 DCs + 3 member servers) all 32bit
editions. I have set up a PC with Server 2008 Enterprise 64bit in
its own domain but on the same physical LAN and IP range. When I
come to try and establish a trust between the 2 domains it does
seem to set them up at both ends but when you come to validate the
trusts it fails saying a DC cannot be found in the other domain.
The DNS server on the win 2008 is set to see the 2 DNS servers on
the 2003 domain as forwarders so can't see why AD on the 2008
machine says it can't find a DC in the 2003 domain.

Any pointers greatfully appreciated.
*this isn't mission critical we are just experimenting with 2008
to
get
familiar with it.
