clients joining a domain

I have 1 win2k server and 10 win2k workstations. The entire network is NOT
connected to the internet. On 2 of the workstations they have a 2nd network
card that attaches to a router that gets them on the internet. On these 2
machines the primary network card has static IP addresses and the DNS is
pointed to the builtin server router address. The secondary adapter is set
dynamically. These 2 machines will not join the domain due to a dns lookup
problem. I was able to get them to join if I disabled the the secondary card
and set the primary to the automatic dhcp & dns settings. I then later
changed the settings back to those above.
My question is regarding understanding the servers role in all of this.
After I join the
domain I only see these 2 computers on the server dhcp client list but
nothing in the
aduc or dns. So does this mean that I’m just connected to the domain but
the server
won’t perform any rights or priviledges until I physically add them to the
aduc and
setup users, groups etc….?? Question #2: Before when I couldn’t join the
domain – does this suggest that the server HAS to provide the IP address to
the workstation in order
for it to join the domain. What was going on before? I was not part of the
domain yet
I still had complete access to the network. Was the server playing any
role in that
scenario at all?
