Re: 2k8 AD from 2k AD

Hello rq,

It can work, but you can also become trouble.

Demoting a DC with exchange installed is NOT supported by MS, leave it until you have the new server running and moved all to the new Exchange.

Hi Meinolf,
Last week I dd "adprep" and "dcprom". The following is the story,
When I was doing "adprep" and I got an eoor which was a schema
conflict with
Exchange 2000. I followed the steps from Q325379 and it didn't work
and I
had to call Microsoft for support. A support engineer changed
Exchange200
attributes manually, then doing "adprep" and it worked. After problem
fixed
the engineer did the "adprep" schema upgrade remotely. It was a
success.
I moved FSMO roles successfully by myself.
Now in the domain, there is one 2K3 DC and two 2K DCs, I'll add one
more 2K3
DC and retire two 2K DCs eventuly.
One question:
Can I demote the 2K DC which has Exchange 200 on it?
We'll install a new Exchange 2007 on a new 2K3 member server later
this
summer.
Thanks for your all help.

Hello rq,

If you will have 2003 R2 as DC yes. Otherwise the adprep from disk 1
will be enough, but think for the future.

Thank you both,
I'll backup system state before doing "adprep".
Should I use "adprep" from W2K3 R2 CD?

Hello rq,

No, but do not worry so much about schema update. I did more often
the last month from 2000 to 2003 and 2008 and also the exchange
schema updates 2000 to 2003 and 2007 without any problem. The
schema update will work or not and if not you get an error message
to fix the problem.

Systme state backup includes everything. Is there a way which only
backup and
restore AD schema?
Thanks,

Hello rq,

NEVER START BEFORE HAVING CREATED A BACKUP OF YOU DATA/MACHINE

So if something goes wrong, you can restore the server from
system state backup.

Thank you very much for the post.
Is there a KB article which describes how to backup and restore
schema
master?
I'm working a productive AD domain with "adprep" procesure. In
case
of
failure, I need to restore schema master.
Our AD is a single forest single domain network.
Thanks again.

Hi,
I'm reading the procedure information from the 2K3 Install CD,
before
doing
adprep and found that #4 step said,
"Disconnect the schema master from the network and do not
reestablish
the
connection until step 9 in this procedure."
Question:
1. why?
I assume this will be , if the upgrade fails you can completely
remove the broken/upgraded DC and still have the other one with
the correct information without replicating some new infos. So
then you can easily make the existing old server schema master
and be at the same point/version like before.

2. We only have to 2K DCs in the network the other one is
running
Exchange
2K on it. Is there any risk?
I did schema upgrades more often the last month ago, until now
i think round 10 from 2000, 2003 and 2008, with adding exchange
2003 and 2007 without any problems in different domain with
different security levels. Even if you get a problem during the
upgrade, it will just stop without changing anything. So you
have a complete upgrade or none.

Thanks,
Roger

Hi All,
I have similar situation. In our single forest and single
domain
network,
all DCs are W2K with some W2K3 member servers. After reading
above
messages,
I'm going to add a W2K8 server to join the domain as a
member
server
(new
hardware) first, then promot it to a DC. And also move the
primary
roles from
a W2K DC to this new W2K8 DC. Next step is to promot a
couple
of
W2K3 member
servers to DC as well and then to retire all old W2K DCs
because
the
hardware
is too old.
Is this upgrad path OK? Please advice,
Thanks

Yes. You need to be aware that the minimum DFL for Windows
Server 2008 is Windows 2000 NATIVE. If you still have
Windows 2000 MIXED, you need to increase the DFL first to
at least Windows 2000 NATIVE

Do you HAVE TO go to 2k3 first from 2k?

NOPE

Can 2k and 2k8 DC's happily live together in mixed mode
until all 2k DC's are either retired or updraded?

NO, not when DFL = Windows 2000 MIXED. YES if Windows 2000
NATIVE

Morning,

I'm reading lots of documentation regarding this online

There's some information I can't find though regarding the
upgrade
process
from win2k.

Sounds good to me as long as the hardware can adequately run
2008.....
