Meinwolf,
Thankd for the reply. That did create the .msi file for me. Some other
files where also created so i copied them all to the server share.
Here is what I did next (I am trying to assign the software to a computer).
1) create a global security group in Active Directory
2)added the computer objects for the computers I want the software installed
on into the global security group
3)gave the security group read & execute read permissions on the folder that
contains the .msi files and also to the .msi file itself as well as the extra
files that the extraction create
4)created, linked, and enforced a group policy object where I created a new
package under Computer Config-->Software Settings-->Software installation and
used assign
5)When I rebooted one of the computers that I put into the OU that had this
new GPO linked/enforced on it, the computer said it was installing the office
2007 compatibility pack for office 2003 but when I logged it, the
compatibility pack was not there.
What could have went wrong? Is it OK that I gave the folder share on the
server permissions to the security group that only has computer objects in
it? Would I need to give that security group any type of permissions on the
folders higher up in the directory structure?

Hello Biff,.
If you choose it as described you get a popup for license agreement, check
it and after that you get an popup that it was extracted. It will not install
if you choose the option /extract:path

If I open a DOS box and input the command, the patch tries to install.
I was under the impressions I have to make the .exe file into a .msi
file which I do not know how to do.

Hello Biff,
You can extract the .exe file to a folder, then you have the .msi
file you need:
D:\Download\officecompatibilit>FileFormatConverters.exe
/extract:D:\Download\officecompatibilit

So I downloaded the office 2007 compatibility pack for office 2003
and I want to try to install it via group policy.
The file I downloaded is a *.exe file.
Do I need to somehow create a .msi file in order to accomplish the
installation? If so, how do I do it?
Also, I would like to assign the program to a computer. So when I
setup the permissions on the installation file, do I just give the
Active Directory security group which has our computer users in it
just the Read & Execute plus Read permissions?
Or would I instead add the computer name objects and give those Read
& Execute plus Read permissions to the computer name objects
instead?
