Hello rq,
Maybe it was not clear enough. Insert the 2008 install disk in the domain controller which is the SCHEMA master of the 2003 domain. Then run the adprep command from the 2008 install disk sources\adprep\adprep.exe
Doesn't matter when you add the 2008 as a member server to the domain. Can be before or after changing the schema.
Best regards

In your 1st post you said,
"Install it as a member server, upgrade the schema with adprep command
from
the 2008 disk and then run dcpromo."
Is this "upgrade the schema with adprep..." from new added 2008
server?
Thanks,
Roger

Hello rq,
NO, if you read the previous post you can see, that it has to be run
on the SCHEMA MASTER of the 2003 domain. The schema master role is on
one of the DC's or if you have only one DC on that one. HERE you have
to run the adprep commands with an account that is member of the
schema admins.

In my case, using W2K8 CD to run
ADPREP /FORESTPREP
ADPREP /DOMAINPREP /GPPREP
on the newlly added W2K8 member server
and then run DCPROMO on this W2K8 server. Right?
Thanks!

Hello rq,
Before, on the schema master of the domain, normally the first
installed dc, find it out with "netdom query fsmo" form the command
line, if you have the support tools from the 2003 install disk
installed.

Before run DCPROMO or after?

that should be OK
you need at least:
ADPREP /FORESTPREP
ADPREP /DOMAINPREP /GPPREP
ADPREP /RODCPREP
the last one is not really required if you do not use RODCs, but
it
does not hurt either!
for the upgrade have a look at:

Hi All,
I have similar situation. In our single forest and single
domain
network,
all DCs are W2K with some W2K3 member servers. After reading
above
messages,
I'm going to add a W2K8 server to join the domain as a member
server
(new
hardware) first, then promot it to a DC. And also move the
primary
roles
from
a W2K DC to this new W2K8 DC. Next step is to promot a couple of
W2K3
member
servers to DC as well and then to retire all old W2K DCs because
the
hardware
is too old.
Is this upgrad path OK? Please advice,
Thanks

There's some information I can't find though regarding theYes. You need to be aware that the minimum DFL for Windows
upgrade
process
from win2k.
Is it possible to introduce a windows 2008 server into a 2000
AD
domain,
then run the adprep process from the 2k8 server and take to
domain
straight for 2k AD to 2k8 AD?
Server 2008 is Windows 2000 NATIVE. If you still have Windows
2000 MIXED, you need to increase the DFL first to at least
Windows 2000 NATIVE
Do you HAVE TO go to 2k3 first from 2k?NOPE
Can 2k and 2k8 DC's happily live together in mixed mode untilNO, not when DFL = Windows 2000 MIXED. YES if Windows 2000
all
2k
DC's
are either retired or updraded?
NATIVE
