Here's our situation...
Our landlord doles out IP config over DHCP and we must be on this network.
We have a static IP as our DC's address, and it runs DNS. If we point a client at the domain, and add the DC as a DNS server (in place of those given out over DHCP), all works fine. If we remove the DC from the DNS servers on the client and just put the DC in the hosts file, logging on to the domain works ok, but the GPO won't be enforced (running gpupdate indicates it can't locate the DC).
This is really annoying because if we hardcode people's DNS to our DC, then their networking at home/hotel becomes a problem.
What's the correct solution here?
Configure Your clients to use Your DC as a DNS server and this should solve your problems with a domain.
now on your DNS server use "forwarders" tab in a properties to set forwarders to any DNS you like ... for example this one which is assigned by DHCP.
This should allow your clients to properly resolve internal and external names.
