We have a domain controller that is running on old hardware and needs to
be
removed. We are running 2003 server in mixed mode with some 2000 dc's and
all
workstations are xp. This dc is running 2003 and was the first server
upgraded from 2000. All the FSMO roles have been transferred to another
2003
dc. The problem is that I cannot log on to the console, it only pulls up a
blank blue screen after logging on. Task manager will not work at all. I
can
access the services applet, event viewer and other such applets from a
remote
computer. I have moved all shared data from the dc. I want to remove this
dc
completely. What is the best way to do this?
DCPromo.
Should I just physically remove
it and then run metadata cleanup in ds repair mode on another dc to remove
it, or is there a better way?
Eventually, if DCPromo won't work but since some service applets work it
stands a good chance.
If I wanted to keep it I would try (some of) these steps:
chkdsk /r (follow by next item)
REPAIR "Install"
Different account -- you might just have a hosed USER PROFILE
Holding SHIFT while pressing the LOGON button to avoid startup programs
Checking for LOW disk space on the System/Boot volume and in Temp
locations
Apply latest service packs/Hot fixes
The CHKDSK and REPAIR install usually work even if the easy fixes
don't.
Much thanks in advance!
