Hi All,

Can someone please give me a good explaination (or link to) of sites &
services and replication? More specifically, as I understand there are
different techniques or methods by which sysvol (NTFRS or DFS with R2) and
AD
(KCC) is replicated??

Yes. AD replicates the actual directory objects. The FRS (which
is also used by DFS) replicates the SysVol file objects.

The BUILT-IN HELP is actually quite good. There are also good
articles on all this on the Microsoft web site.

The OReily AD book (Cat and Kitten) is good on the subjec if
you want paper.

For example what's the difference between the IP (or SMTP) Inter Site
Transport Link (Costs & Replication Interval) and the NTDS site
replication
schedule?

SMTP is practically never used. It is for special (usually obscure) cases
where replication efficiency is severely limited due to issues with the
WAN line. It requires separate domains, and needs certificates to work.

IP (or RPC-IP) Intersite replication is used for practiclaly all intersite
replication.
(As well as all Intrasite).

Each Site Link technically has a Protocol (even though we almost always
use IP) and more importantly (to focus on) are the Schedule, Frequency,
and Cost.

I hope that sort of makes sense. Whenever I search for Sites & Services
info I only seem to find explainations on subnets which I understand.

Search for "Site Links" if you wish more discussion of the differences
between
SMTP and IP, or add these words too:

[ "Site Links" site:microsoft.com SMTP | IP ]

I've
also asked quite a few people who despite being "aware" of S&S they don't
fully understand what it does.

It is common for otherwise knowledgable people to have little in depth
knowledge of these items.

If you have more specific questions, one of us can probably answer
them -- especially if they are relevant to common scenarios or
common admin issues.
