You have to create there a new subnet and move the server from MAIN
subnet to the branch subnet.

I have already prepared the sites (both servers are currently in MAIN
office). I suppose I can add the subnet only when the server will be
there.

Hello Hubert,

If you move the branch server to the new office, i assume with a
different subnet then the MAIN office, do not forget to setup Active
directory sites and services. you have to create there a new subnet
and move the server from MAIN subnet to the branch subnet. This
shorten's logon time for users on the branch office for example.

It looks like as it would be OK? It seems that it is only

At least i would restart the DNS service.

As I didn't make any changes, it would not be necessary (?), but
I have the opportunity to restart the server today and I will do
it, at least to play all the latest windows updates.

If DNS is not installed change the preferred DNS server ip to
the
main DC
and NO secondary DNS until replication is finished. Then change
back
to
the settings from the earlies posting (preferred itself,
secondary
the
other).
Go to Start, run type appwiz.cpl, choose windows components,
networking
services and check DNS. Make sure you have your install disks
and
the
service pack files available (will ask for them). Then just
wait
minimum
15 minutes and DNS will be replicated.
Just for my understanding: what would be wrong if we had only a
DNS on the main server? When the new server is put at the branch
office and a client pc needs to resolve an address, it will be
routed via the secondary DNS (or better primary) to the main
server which can give back the IP? Of course it would take a bit
more time because of the VPN link, although it has a quite
acceptable bandwith. Am I right or do I oversea something?

It is not wrong to only have one DNS, but if the MAIN DNS is down
or the connection is broken, NO user in the branch office can
login to the domain and also for redundancy it is better to have
more then one DC.

The problem is that I am right now not on my customer site and
thus can't put a CD. The CD I have, from DELL, is "Microsoft
Windows Server 2003 R2, Standard Edition with SP2". Do I still
need service packs files? If yes, which ones?
If the SP is included, i think you do not need the SP separat and
if it will be SP2, always the last one used during
install/upgrade.

This new server must go live on next tuesday afternoon. As I
have the feeling that now it does not look bad, I think I could
go to my customer one hour before to install DNS and do the last
tests. Or you ask me to do a lot of other tests, then I must go
there on Monday :-)

I personaly would still go on Monday, you will do some updates
and you have get DNS properly configured. Also if dcdiag
/v,netdiag /v and replmon shows errors you have to fix them.

Just a last question. At the beginning of our exchange, you told
me this:

By the clients, I set as first DNS the server IP on which I
want to login.

NOT a must, CAN also be the other way around.

I think I understand better now why: because of the subnets
declaration in "sites and services"? What I don't understand is
your "CAN also be the other way around."

Even if you set an ip address first, it still can happen that the
client will authenticate against another DC. Or you have a
separate DNS server which is no DC, also possible.

Any way, vielen Dank (from a French living in german part of
switzerland). I have learned a lot and will be more relax on
tuesday...

Open the DNS management console, mark your forward lookup zone
and on the right pane it shows AD integrated or
primary/secondary, check also the reverse lookup zone.

Also restart the main server after all these changes

It will be difficult: it is a productive server and I should
ask for permission. Perhaps beginning of next week.

First, I have just checked and the last changed you
recommended has brought something: replication seems to
work without errors (replmon). dcdiag and netdiag brings
up the same errors as below.

Yes, the 195.xxx is an external ISP. My thoughts was to
resolve adresses in Internet but it seems to be wrong...
(?)

Hello Hubert,

On both servers remove the 195.x.x.x address. These are
external ISP DNS servers that you have set as Forwarders
in the DNS management console under the server
properties. Set on each servers NIC itself to preferred
DNS and the other as secondary. And on a DC disable the
unused NIC and if exist delete the record in DNS list.

one. Unfortunately, I have the same results: all
passed on main server but same errors as before on the
new server with dcdiag.

Should I wait some time before running dcdiag again?

If you have more then one DNS server never use the
loopback ip address 127.0.0.1, set the ip 's like
this and then restart the new one and run the tests
again:

preferred DNS: server ip address
secondary DNS: other DNS server

I have a 2003 SP1 Server which is working alone
until now (main office) as DC.
I have added a new Server (2003 R2, also DC, same
Domain)
that
will
be
transported to a branch office
(VPN connection) next week. For the time being, it
is
in
the
main
office.
Replication is working well: if I add a user on
one
server,
it
appears
also on the other. Changes in SYSVOL are also
replicated.
Run dcdiag, netdiag and replmon to check for errors
on both machines. If errors dsiplayed solve them
before moving. Also make sure both DC's are Global
catalog servers. I would use in DNS Active
Directory integrated zones, if not done.

Reading your mail, I have done some checks and made

- first DNS of new Server was IP of main server.

- Global catalog was not set by new server: set it

Testing all with the client PCs, I have following
problem:

Doing this for both servers woks well. But if I
login
(on
a
client PC) as domain administrator to add, for
example,
"domain
user"
to the local admin group, having the DNS IP
pointing
to
the
new
Server, I see only the local objects.
If I change the DNS IP to main server, I can then
see
all
domain
users, groups, etc. Thus to be able to configure
what
I
want,
I
must
first point to the main server, then change back
to
the
new
server.
Should normally be no problem. Never changed DNS
for configuring or reading AD info. Again check
with the tools above.

BTW, if you have the need for making normal user to
local admins, better use Restricted groups instead
