We have a domain controller that needed a reinstall of Server 2003. We
backed up the system state and all folders needed to reinstall AD. We
reisntalled the OS and installed all updates. THe server is still just in a
workgroup and has not been designated as a DC. It is connected to the
network in our shop and the backup is on a tape drive in our network. We
will be using backup exec.
We were able to run the backup and get the AD information back onto the
server but when we reboot it it does not come up as a domain controller.
Do we need to run dc promo to designate it as a dc? Do we need to create a
domain for it and then designate it as a dc? We are unsure as to how to
proceed and the documentation from microsoft is unclear on this.
When we did the backup we started up the server using the restore directory
services option. Does this only work if the server is already designated as
a DC?
Any help and answers and suggestion would be appreciated.
Thank you
david
