Hello,
Thanks for reply.
With Universal group membership caching, domain controller must connect to a
global catalog server across a WAN link only for initial logons in the site;
thereafter, universal group membership can be checked from a local cache. But
Search clients,
however, must always connect to global catalog servers across the WAN if no
global catalog server exists in the client’s site.
I think, it will be suggested to configure both the primary and standby DC
as GC with AD-integrated DNS and First DC to hold all the FSMO roles.
Thanks
Thanks again,
abkid.

Hi,
Thanks for reply.
We shall have only one domain. We will have many branches/sites over WAN
links. If all DCs at site are GC then we can avoid the queries over WAN,
so i
want all DCs at branches/sites to be GC too.
now it's starting to make sense.
Have you considered universal Group membership caching?
From the 2 DC at the Central Data Centre, one shall be GC anyway, the
other
can have all FSMO roles and not be a GC. But both the DC at Data Centre
shall
be on the same site. I am planning to have the other DC as a Standby DC in
case of any failure of the Primary DC. So if i have the second DC as GC
too
which will be directly connected on the same site, does that matter ?
Please guide.
Thanks again for replies.

Hello,
Thanks all for reply.
I want all the DC to be GC. We shall have a single forest and a single
domain. All DC shall not be of similar hardware. The Primary - first 2
DCs
shall be good high end servers.
If you have only one domain you do not need a GC at all :)
I want to have all the DC to be GC at the branches.
Do you have many sites in your domain or is it just one site?
What is the reason that you want all DC to be GC?
So what about planning
for the first 2 primary DC at Data Centre.
1 - Both DC to be GC, AD-Integrated DNS and First DC to hold all the
FSMO
roles.
OR
2 - Only First DC to be GC, AD-Integrated DNS and Second DC to hold all
the
FSMO roles.
Please guide.
Thanks again,
abckid.

Hello,
I want to clear about assiging Operation Master roles to the First 2
DCs
in
the domain.
Is it a good idea to have all the DCs as GC with AD-integrated DNS
and
to
assign all the Operation Mater roles to the First DC ? There are
some
best
practices where the First DC holds only GC role and the Second DC
holds
all
the Operation Master roles and is not a GC.
If we plan to make all the DCs in the Domain as GC, then which DC
(First
or
Second) shall be the Operation Master for the Domain for the best
scenerio.
(All Forest and Domain Master roles.)
Please guide.
Every forest should have a Domain Naming Master and a Schema master
and
every domain should have a RID, Infrastructure and PDC emulator.
I prefer one DC as Schema Master /Domain Naming Master/GC, and another
DC
as
RID/PDC/Infrastructure.
Remember that in the same DC you can have RID/PDC/Infra, or RID/GC, or
Schema/DNM/GC, but
you must avoid PDC and GC or Infrastructure and GC in the same DC
(unless
you have all DCs configured as GC, but why would you want to do that?)
