Re: Uupgrade to Server 2003 R2 AD

Are there only certain features that require the AD to be prepped? Or do
all
features require AD preperation?

Only the features R2 provides. R2 provides better DFSR replication so the
DFSR schema will be updated. R 2 does not update any DNS features, so DNS is
not updated.

We're looking to upgrade our forest to Server 2003 R2 AD. What steps
are
involved with this? From my research I've found that before you
upgrade
any
DC to Server 2003 R2 you must prepare the forest schema using
ADprep.exe
/forestprep from the R2 disc.

Do you also have to run that on the Domain as well before R2 is
installed
(like adprep.exe /domainprep)?

FYI R2 is a feature update that has nothing to do with a service pack. To
use the R2 features you have to run AD prep from the second disk of the
R2
set then you would install the R2 update on only the servers you want to
use
the updated features on.
Say you have a Win 2000 domain you are upgrading to Win 2k3. You run
adprep
on the schema master for your domain from the *first* disk of the R2 set.
Then you can upgrade to Win 2k3. To go from Win 2k3 to Win 2k3 R2 on the
schema master for your Win 2k3 domain you run adprep on the schema master
for the domain from the *second* disk in the R2 set. Then you would
install
the R2 features only on the servers you want to use those update
features.
If you're not going to use the R2 features you don't need the second AD
prep
or the installation of the R2 features.

Do I have to start with my root DC's or can child domains be upgraded
before
the the root DC's? I'm assuming that R2 DC's have no issues with non
R2
DC's
or is there a Service Pack level that non R2 DC's need to be at in
order
to
communicate properly with R2 DC's?

First you run adprep (whether for Win 2k3 or R2) on the Schema master for
your domain. Upgrade to Win 2k3 or R2 at your leisure. That is a loaded
question. I've seen Win 2k3 SP1 R2 disk sets and Win 2k3 SP2 R2 disk
sets.
each has it's own SP level. Using the first disk of either set to install
Windows 2003 and using the second disk from the "other" set, the install
will balk.

I would suggest setting up a "box" to try this with before going to
production.
