I agree with both you and Ryan about manually transferring the roles. I did
mention DHCP and making the new one a GC prior to the demotion, however I
did forget to mention WINS.

Just to add, in all the cases I've ever dealt with, that is as long as the
domain is fully functional and without errors (replication, NTDS, etc), with
a single domain having two DCs and demoting one of them, automatic transfers
have worked without a hitch .
