I am looking for some thoughts on our plan
We want to install a new 2003 DC and have it keep to name and ip
address of an existing 2000 DC. Our plan is as follows. Please
comment. We our plan work?
1. Install new server with windows 2003
Do not forget service packs, etc.
2. copy file and printer shares to 2003 serverPrintmigrator from MS and xxcopy or robocopy for copying the files including the security permissions.

3. demote windows 2000 DC
Can be, that you get an error when starting the demoting, then uncheck the Global catalog checkmark under ADSS.
4. remove computer name of windows 2000 dc if needed
If demoting was succesful, the computername should move from DC's OU to the computers container in AD automatically. Give AD time for replication all infos to all other dc's. Check with repadmin on your dc's. If that part is done, i would remove the old computer name from AD to prevent failures when adding the 2003 machine with the new name. Check that all DNS entries from the demoted machines are gone or delete them by hand. Give again time for replication from AD and DNS.
5. rename windows 2003 server to name of windows 2000 DC
6. change ip address on win 2003 server to ip address that win 2000 DC
had
7. promote win 2003 server to DC
This allows us to install a new 2003 DC and keep the same name that
was held by a windows 2000 DC.
Think also about redundancy from DNS and Global catalog configuration in your domain.
If you are ready with everything and give again time for replication, run dcdiag, netdiag and repadmin to check for errors on all dc's.
Best regards
