Hello Tim,
Do you have only one 2000 DC? Then you will loose the complete domain, if you follow your way. No domain user can login again after it. Please give some more info about the network configuration.
Best regards

I am looking for some thoughts on our plan
We want to install a new 2003 DC and have it keep to name and ip
address of an existing 2000 DC. Our plan is as follows. Please
comment. We our plan work?
1. Install new server with windows 2003
2. copy file and printer shares to 2003 server
3. demote windows 2000 DC
4. remove computer name of windows 2000 dc if needed
5. rename windows 2003 server to name of windows 2000 DC
6. change ip address on win 2003 server to ip address that win 2000 DC
had
7. promote win 2003 server to DC
This allows us to install a new 2003 DC and keep the same name that
was held by a windows 2000 DC.
