Strange Issue With a Renamed Account

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I am running into an odd issue. I have an Active Directory (Windows 2003 DCs) environment with two domains in one tree. The parent domain is considered the "production" domain and the development environment is contained in the child domain. A user account was created in the parent domain and was found to be misnamed, so it was renamed with the correct information. Now, on any Windows 2000 member server in the child domain, if I attempt to add that user account to a local group and click the "Check Names" button, the account appears twice, once with a generic display name, and once with the correct display name, and both display identical UPNs. The incorrect account claims to be in the default Users container, while the correct account displays in the proper OU. If I look in ADUC, I only see the correct account in the correct location. This problem doesn't appear on any Windows 2003 member servers in either domain, or on any Windows 2000 member servers in the parent domain. It seems to be causing issues granting access to certain resources on these W2K members, like SQL databases for example. Has anyone run into this before? Besides deleting and re-creating the account, can anyone recommend any other troubleshooting?

Thanks!
