Re: DCPROMO a Windows 2003 R2 server into a Windows 2000 environment

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

I have to agree with Jorge de Alemeida Pinto. Once the R2 o/s is on the
system, you have to use disk 2. If you are running Windows 2003 nonR2 you
could use disk 2 to extend the schema and not promote a Windows 2003 R2 o/s.
Maybe that is where you are getting confused.

weird discussion....

he has a R2 server that he wants to be a DC...so, for an R2 server to be a
DC you need to update the AD schema to R2 version...
the same occurs when installing R2 on an existing non-R2 DC, you need to
update the AD schema to R2 version

Ok, but if he doesn't want to use R2 features isn't mandatory to upgrade
the schema. Of course all depends how you install the SO (did you read
what I wrote before?). When you say YOU NEED to use CD2 to that work that
is = FALSE (or not necessarily TRUE), because you only do that if you
want, so ISN'T MANDATORY to do that.

Also:

When you say if it's the first DC in the forest it's automatically
upgraded this is also = FALSE (or not necessarily TRUE), because all
depends how you install the SO.

- To finish this thread, I would like to say that was not my intention to
hurt you with any comments that I did before, actually most of the times
I don't reply back to avoid situations like this one that clearly show
that not all tests were done, so I'm sorry for anything that I said, my
point was to alert to something that most people miss, and that is normal
because in most cases the AD infrastructure is already in place when you
start introducing the new DCs that were installed with both CDs.

Jorge,
He is trying to dcpromo a WS03 R2 member server to a WS03 R2 DC in an
env that has DCs at Schema ver 30.
To do that you must upgrade the Schema to ver 31.
And, that I have tested thank you ;-) Have you?
If it's the first DC in the Forest, the Schema upgrade is automagically
done. Otherwise, you have to upgrade it.

Regards,

Austin

Hi Austin,
Yes I have, but the question is "Again" did you tested or did you try
to understand why you would to have to run adprep from cd2?
The link says, if you get this error you should do this.....
But ask yourself, do you really need to do that?
In short, the answer is no. Why is not mandatory upgrade the schema to
R2?
This applies to 32bit and 64bit OS W2k3
If you install only OS and ignore/dismiss the second CD after the OS is
installed then you have a Windows2003SP1/2 normal. If you run the
second CD
after OS installation then you'll be forced to upgrade the schema when
you try to introduce that server as a DC, but isn't MANDATORY to do
that unless
you run the second CD after OS promotion.

Makes sense?

Hi
You DON'T necessarily NEED to use the CD2 FROM R2.
I know that this is the most common answer, but isn't totally true.
If you plan to use R2 features you'll need to upgrade the schema, but
if you don't want to use them, you don't need to do that.

Hi Jeff,
You need to use the ADpred on Disk 2 of the WS03 R2 Disk Set.
Your Schema will then be at version 31 and compatible with WS03 R2
AD.

Hello All,

I followed Microsoft instructions to upgrade the Windows 2000
environment:

I only have one DC in my domain currently and I am looking to add
another one:
1) I did the adprep /forestprep and adprep /domain command with no
errors
2) I checked the registry and it is reporting that the schema is 30
which
means it is setup for Windows2003 and Windows 2000.
3) DCPROMO the new server and I received the following error
message
The version of the Active Directory Schema of the forest is not
compatible
with the version of Active Directory on this computer
4) Tried to rerun the adprep command ....they say that they are
successful

Does anyone have any ideas or do I need to upgrade the only dc and
dns to
Windows2003 then add the new dc.....

Thank you

Jeff
