Re: MOVING A DC TO A NEW DOMAIN

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

Hi

Moving to a new Domain or Moving to a new Site (2 different things)?

- If you're planning that DC to a new domain, you must demote that DC from
its original domain and remove it from the Domain as well (this is because
the DC after de-promotion becomes as member server for that domain).
- Then in the new domain promote it using dcpromo (normal process).

-However if you're planning to move to a different site:
The key is to let the other existing DCs aware of that change, including DNS
records.
Although there are different ways to do this, you can try this one:

- Point the DC "to be moved" to an existing DC/DNS under its preferred DNS
NIC. Make sure that the DC to be moved has connectivity to that DC/DNS after
you changed its location.
- Go to the Active Directory sites and services and create that new site and
assign the new subnet.
- Replicate the changes.
- Change the DC IPAddress, and manually move it to the new destination Site.
- Restart the netlogon service, and run the "dcdiag /fix" cmd (support
tools).
- Make sure that new DNS records are correct.
- Replicate all changes.
- Run dcdiag and netdiag and make sure that no errors are shown (note: some
errors may appear under evenlog that may because by this change, worry about
only with errors logged after you assume that all steps are completed and
the DC is supposed to function correctly)
