Hello Jeff,
I would create a new domain user account or testing. Do not play with your default account. Also think about taking a new machine, configure like the existing and test on that one. If you have problems with running software use regmon and Process Monitor for finding the problem and configure it for your needs.

BTW. the most software also runs with normal users. We have around 150 different apps and no problems with W2000 and XP.

Hello Jeff,Hi Meinolf,
Just to understand you clear. All Domain users are placed via
Restricted Groups policy in the workstation local administrators
group and you like to know what happens if you take them out from
this group?

Yes, you are correct. :)
I'm going to use myself as a guinea pig on a 2nd computer, move my
domain account out of the local administrators group on the PC to
local users group and see what happens.
