XP SP2 "Access is denied" trying to join domain

I'm not sure this is the appropriate forum. Pls feel free to redirect me if
it's not.

I've got an XP SP2 PC that receives an error when trying to join one domain
"Access is denied". the credentials I use are those of a valid domain
admin, account not locked out, etc. I can join it to a different domain,
ruling out the client as the culprit.

I can log onto the domain controller in the problem domain with the ID/pwd I
used to try to join the domain. I see no errors in any log on the DC. I
don't know if this matters, but the DC is a virtual system.

I've joined other PCs & servers to this domain in the past.

There had been a PC w/ the same name in the domain. I deleted in in ADUC,
but couldn't join from the client. I tried to join using a different
computername, but that failed, too.

I created another domain admin account and it fails to join the domain.

Netdiag.exe on the DC looks OK.

I verified that SERVICE has the "Impersonate a client after authentication."
user rights.

I've rebooted both client and DC.

any suggestions?

Thanks
