Thanks Jorge.
(Apologies for my delayed response I have been away on Holiday)
I have looked that article and all it does is change the display name field
in AS to "Last Name, first Name" and populates the First Name and last name
fields.
Unfortunately this does not resolve my problem. My problem is that all
users created in NT4.0 and upgraded show in ADUC as the NT 4.0 username such
as SMITJ, however any created using Active Directory Users and Computers
(ADUC) show and appear in the list as (First name Last name) such as John
Smith.
Also when you look at the properties of the user in ADUC the name next to
the icon of the user on the general tab is the NT4.0 username for upgraded
users (i.e SMITJ), however users created using ADUC have the full name I.e
(John Smith)
When you enable the advanced features view in ADUC, then view the properties
of a user, then select the object tab, the users created using NT4.0 then
upgraded have a canonincal name of mydomain.local\users\SMITJ, however users
created using ADUC have a canonincal name of mydomain.local\users\John Smith.
I have spoken to someone who siad that I need to change the way the
canonincal name of each new user is created to reflect the NT4.0 format ie.
SMITJ or amend all upgrgaded users canonincal name to be the new Windows 2003
format of first name last name)
All I want is my list of users in ADUC to apear as either the my NT4.0
format (SMITJ) or the the Windows 2003 format (First Name Last Name)
Any assistance would be greatly appreaciated.
Thanks in advanced

I was wondering if someone could help me.
We have recently upgraded our domain from a Windows NT4.0 environment to
Windows 2003 R2. We carried out an in-place upgrade and apart from a few
initial DNS issues the upgrade went well.
We have however noticed a problem which is causing us some issues which I
would like to resolve before we raise the domain functional level to
Windows
2003 Native.
The problem is as follows:
In our NT4.0 environment (pre-upgrade) all users were created using User
Manager for Domains, the username would be created from the first four
characters of the surname appended with their initial, i.e. for a user
called
John Smith the username would be SMITJ.
After the upgrade all upgraded users appear in the Active Directory Users
and Computers MMC Console in alphabetical order using the Name Field, I.E
PERTP
SMITJ
TOMMJ
UNIAL
However now if we add a new user using the ADUC Console the users appears
as
First Name Last Name (i.e John Smith) in the alphabetical list i.e
PERTP
SMITJ
Tomas White
UNIAL
,even though we populated the pre windows 2000 field in the user creation
wizard using the format specified above.
This is not a problem when finding a user using the ADUC console as we
simply add whichever column to the ADUC Console view and sort by that,
however the problem comes when assigning\checking NTFS permissions etc,
as
all users pre upgrade appear in the list as the pre windows 2000 format
and
all users created since the upgrade appear in the First Name Last Name
format
which make them dificuclt to find.
I have read somewhere that I need to use ADSI Edit to make the amendment
that I need however I am unsure as to what field to edit and what the
syntax
should be.
Please could someone assist.
Thanks in advance
