To make it clear...
Now i am in DC3 dsa.msc. It shows DC3.company.com. No problem.
In the same DC3, i tried to "connect to other domain controller" to DC2
and DC4, no problem.
In the same DC3, i tried to "connect to other domain controller" to DC1,
it does not connect to DC1, instead it connect to DC2.

what do you mean with "it will always go to DC2. I have no problem
changing to other DCs except DC1"
By default the dsa.msc will attempt to target the PDCe, but you should
be able to open in any other DC as long as you select it. Note:You also
have the option to save the target DC for future opens of that mmc
console (if you use roaming profiles this may change when you logon
into another Dc and choose other DC as target).

DC1 is the Operation master!
I also noticed that when from either DC2, DC3 or DC4 (DC3 & DC4 in
other building), right-click on the Domain, change to DC1... it will
always go to DC2. I have no problem changing to other DCs except DC1.

Ok,
On that DC open Active Directory Users and Computers and right click
on the domain and choose the option change DC and choose your local
DC, then right click again and choose oprations masters, what
happens? And if you choose a different DC?

If no conclusions please run the following from cmd and search for
output errors
dcdiag /v /c /d /e /s:yourdcname > c:\dcdiag.log

I have point the DC2 Primary DNS server to DC1 without Alternate DNS
server.
I did a ipconfig/flushdns follow by ipconfig/registerdns on DC2. No
error in the event log.
It still shows "ERROR" in the "Operation master:".

"Jorge Silva" <jorgesilva_pt@xxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message

My point was to force a valid and updated DNS server, by pointing
all to the same DNS server without secondaries.
You also need to clear the cache or reboot the Dc(s).
If it's failling Iwould suggest to use dcdiag and netdiag and
search for eventlog errors also check if you've any FW between the
servers or configured in the server itself.

Have already done that, same error. All the DCs are also DNS
server.
DC2, DC3 and DC4 "Preferred DNS server" configuration are pointing
to it's own IP address and "Alternate DNS server" pointing to DC1.

Ok, assuming that DC01 is also DNS server, point DC2 primary DNS
NIC configuration to DC1, then clear local cache DNS cache,
etc... type ipconfig /registerdns, and then check if its showing
the same error.
let us know the results

I used the command "netdom query fsmo" on DC2. Below is the
result.

Schema owner: forest DC
Domain role owner: forest DC
PDC role: DC1 (this is a child domain)
RID role: DC1 (this is a child domain)
Infrastructure owner: DC1 (this is a child domain)

The rest of the DCs (name DC2, DC3 & DC4) instead of showing
"DC1" in the Operations master, it shows "ERROR".

I did run both dcdiag & netdiag. No error! There is no error in
the eventlog as well.
What will this error caused to the Domain? So far there is no
problem with the AD (can create, edit, delete etc).

you may run dcdiag & netdiag.
You may have communication issue between DC.
Any eventlog error about it ?

Yes, it is one of my DC (the 1st installed DC). The
"Operations master" in RID, PDC and Infrastructure is
pointing to itself (which is correct).
The rest of the DC (same Domain) should point to the 1st
installed DC instead it shows "ERROR" on the "Operations
master" field.
All along it si working fine. I don't know when it happens.
I did not remove any DC nor make changes to the
configuration.

Hello,

i think the server that host these FSMO is not reachable.

Is one of your DC (by default, the first you installed)
down ?
Did you remove an old DC ?

If this DC won't be back working again, you may transfer
fsmo roles (seize them)
Using Ntdsutil.exe to transfer or seize FSMO roles to a
domain controller

In Windows 2003, Active Directory.
Right-click Domain, under "Operations Masters", the
"Operations master" field shown "ERROR" in all RID, PDC
and Infrastructure tab.

Any advise what could be the cause?
