Re: R2 Features - Forest

Don't have a link.

When we were starting out trying R2 DFSR we had a MS rep out to check our
setup, this was his recommendation. MS put us in contact with one of the
companies that they were working with to get their DFSR project up and
running. We talked with Arcadis here in Denver and that was their
recommendation also. They went to R2 so they could replicate data back here
to Denver. They only installed the DFSR components on the servers that were
to participate in the replication group.

We have been following the same model. We have over 50 branch servers that
replicate back here to a hub server. We only installed the DFSR component on
the servers we want to replicate back here. Works just fine.

You will need to update the schema in order to prepare your domain/forest

R2 is just some updated features (DFSR, Print manager, etc) You install
those feature on the servers you want to use those features on.

you only need to update your AD schema and others will recommend
installing a
new DC at forest level with W2K3 R2.. What are the recommendations? And
do
you need to have a DC R2 at the child level?

MS best practice is to install only the features/services you need on a
particular server. If you can just run adprep and your domain/forest is
prepared for R2, then best practice is to install the R2 features on the
servers that you want to *use* the R2 features on. No need to have an R2
DC
at the child level unless that DC needs those R2 features.

Example: You run adprep to prepare the domain/forest for the new DFSR
feature. You set up replication between two member servers in a child
domain. At that point replication begins and runs as expected. Installing
an
R2 DC in the child domain will get you absolutely nothing unless you want
that DC to be in the replication group. If that DC is NOT going to be in
a
replication group you are just installing more services (that will not be
used) on that DC and you still have to patch that server with the patches
for DFSR (and take it down for a reboot when you do) to maintain a
service
that is *really* doing nothing.

Hi

I'm searching for info to enable and benefit from the R2 features. Some

Any one out there can shed some light on this greatly appreciated.

One forest with multiple child domains.

Thanks
