if the GPO got deleted how to restore it? I only do tape backup for system state once a week. Once restore does it get applied to its original object, for example, OU? I have done auth restore with AD for user accounts and OU but not GPO.
First of all - before this thing happens once more, I suggest you download the Group Policy Management Console. It's a free download from Microsoft and has a builtin Backup and Restore feature for Group Policy.
This is how I go about it:
- You need to now to GUID of the policy you want to restore.
- Restore your System State (using F8 and the Directory Services Restore mode) to a folder on the disk.
- Reboot (in normal mode) and access "Active Directory Users and Computers"
- Create a new Group Policy and write its GUID down.
- Access the folder where you restored the System State
- Copy all files from the restored "Policies\{GUID}" subfolder to the "Policies\{GUID} folder of written-down new policy.
It's been a while since I made this the last time. I also recommend using the GPMC - makes those things easier ;)
cheers,
Florian
