This may sound silly, but are you logged in as an administrator?
Additionally, is the server either a DC or a member server in a domain?

If you want more detail on the error message from MSI, you could try running
the MSI from the command line with logging enabled:

msiexec -i adfs.msi -l*v c:\adfsinst.txt

Those logs are not easy to interpret unless you are an MSI developer, but it
might be helpful to someone. :)

Couldn't find it in the Add/Remove programs window - which I why I
hunted on the DVD. The server is a DC - I'm following the Step by Step
guide from MS' own website. Found out that ADFS is added to IIS
Manager - even though it doesn't fully install. Figured out the first
error was down to not having .net framework 2.0 installed. After
installing that it now comes back with an error saying

"There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run
as part of the stup did not finish as expected. Contact your support
personnel or package vendor."

Couldn't find any concrete proof as to what this means.
