Hi,
Having problems with our network at work. It randomly drops connection
to the mail server, all my remote desktop connections drop out and
none of the network is accessible. After 2 minutes it will all come
back up again with no explanation why it crashed out. Everyone on the
network gets the same problem at the same time, so its probably
related to the central server in some way?
Not unless you are accessing the central server or using it as a router,
probably.
"networks" don't really crash -- servers and services (including routers do
that.)
You might have a bad NIC (excessive traffic, failing to respect collisions,
etc.) or bad cabling, or a bad piece of hardware like a switch though.
This happends few times an hour at random intervals.
Anyone experienced this before, or know whats going on please help :)
No, we don't know what is going on but from experience we can tell you
that the key is to ISOLATE and IDENTIFY the problem.
You might need to run a Network Monitor/Packet Analyzer like the
Microsoft NetMon (free version 3.0 on Microsoft site for download) or
the (also free) WireShark.*
*Make sure you are AUTHORIZED to run such "sniffers" as in some
companies turning one on is a "termination offense" if it is not authorized.
You might need to check your cabling, hubs/switches whatever hardware
you have. You might need to check with Ping and NSLookup to see if
the problem is IP/routing or some Name Resolution issue.
If you need more help you need to describe how your network is physically
constructed and connected, and precisely where the problems are: locally
or only to the Internet?
