RE: Non exclusive access to redirected folders

With POP3 accounts, the mail is usually on the server (as it appears is your
case) or all on the workstation. When it is stored on the server, things
like the address books, calendars, and tasks stay in the PST files seperate
from the mail.
In this case, you shouldn't have too much trouble moving the PSTs in the
mail applet ont he control panel. This isn't supported, as I mentioned, but
with just POP accounts the risk is much much lower.
Test this out before you deploy widely.

Ryan,.
I think you misunderstood my question, I am not using exchange server. Just
pop 3 accounts on each of the users computers. As i am using folder
redirection for my docs, desktop and application data i was expecting to see
the outlook pst file on the server but it is not there.
I would like to know how to get the pst file redirected to the server. Do i
need to setup roaming profiles for this to happen.

Joeb,
Exchange isn't my strongest suit, so I am sure someone will correct me if I
am wrong.
Generally you want to keep your exchange data on the exchange server unless
it is being archived to a server location. This covers you in most
circumstances with server backups and allows your users to roam as needed.
When you start moving all of the mail to the workstations, is where the
problems begin. This, combined with the fact that storing the "local" pst
files on a server location through UNC is not supported puts you in a bad
spot.
The Enterprise solution, other than integrating with a clariion or something
like that, is to move the data back to the server, store archives in a
backed-up server location, and enforce an archiving and retention policy to
manage the size of your mailstores.
Hope this helps.

Ryan,
Thanks for the info , that seems to have resolved the problem. There is one
other problem I have noticed. I have the application data being redirected to
the server but the outlook.pst file is not being redirected so when i perform
a backup of all data on the server I am not capturing this file.
If I look in the outlook folder on the server there is a .pst file but it is
only about 20kb. I know that that for this particular user the outlook file
on their computer is several hundred MB.
what can I do to redirect the outlook folder.

Joeb,
When that box is ticked, that determines what permissions are set when the
folder is created. If you create new users, those folders would have
permissions such that administrators would be able to get to the files.
To fix this, you need to go to each of the folders, take ownership of the
folder, give yourself permissions, make sure the user still hase permissions,
and then you'll be ok. One note, depending upon your GPO settings, you can
require ownership by the user for personal folder access. This is not a
default setting, but it is the first place to look if you reset the
permissions but then the user loses access.
Hope this helps even if it is labor intensive. If you have hundreds or
thoudands to do, there are some scriptng methods, looping through the
directories either with CACLS or resetting the ACE entries through script.
These tend to be more trouble than they're worth unless you truly have a lot
to do.

Hi , I have a few notebooks in a domain with a 2003 server. I originally
setup folder redirection and ticked the box which gave the user exclusive
access to their own folders.
This seemed to be working good. I now need to remove the exclusive access so
i unticked the box but i still cannot see other users folders. Is there any
reason why the exlusive access has not been removed. Is there a manual way to
override this.
If I try to access the folder I get a message saying access is denied.
I need to remove the exclusive access because a backup program I am running
will not backup the redirected folders because it also cannot get access.
Hope someone will be able to help.
