@u30g2000hsc.googlegroups.com:
I think this is the correct group to post in, but if not, please
steer me to the correct one. This is my problem;
I am the system admin for a small domain, my first IT job. I have
been experimenting with a free copy of Vista Business. I got it to
load on a spare partition and dual boot with XP. It joined the domain
fine, but now the XP partiton will not log onto the domain anymore,
the error message says that "the domain controller is unavailable or
your account is no longer valid. One thing I think I did incorrectly
is that when setting up the Vista install, I named the computer the
same name as the XP installation. If you can help me figure out what
I did wrong, please let me know before my boss finds out I'm breaking
more things than I'm fixing. I appreciate any help.
When you joined the Vista machine as the same name, it overwrote the old
XP machine's entry in the domain. As far as the domain is concerned, the
XP machine is now unknown.
You could now rename the Vista machine (it will also be renamed on the
domain if you have it connected while you do this), then log into the XP
as a local administrator and join it to the domain again (this brings up
another lesson that you may need to learn - make sure you have a local
administrator account that you can log into before you make any changes
of this sort).
Since the XP machine thinks it is still a member of the domain, you will
have to take it out first by putting it into a workgroup (any name will
do), then join it to the domain (you don't have to reboot between these
two steps even though it will say you need to reboot after moving it into
a workgroup, but you will have to reboot it after joining the domain).
Note that if you don't rename the Vista machine first, you will just
repeat the error and lose that machine's domain membership.
Rejoining the XP machine to the domain will not actually restore things
identically as before - even though it will have the same name, it will
not have the exact same credentials as before (this will probably not
make any noticable difference in most cases, though).
