Thank you for the quick reply.

Just to ensure, how do I determine the schema master for a domain?

"Jorge de Almeida Pinto [MVP]" gave you the solution.

R2 is not the same a SP2. R2 is just some updated features.
See:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/R2/R2FAQ.mspx

SP2 see:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/sp2/data-***.mspx

R2 is a two disk set. The adprep on the first CD will prepare a Win 2k
domain/forest for a Win 2k3 DC.
adprep ran from the second R2 disk prepares the domain/forest to use the
updated features of R2.

If you have multiple domains, you need to run adprep /domainprep on the
schema master for the domain you want to use the R2 features in.

Installing SP2 on will do nothing to prepare the domain/forest for R2.

The other domains are W2K3 SP1 also, not R2.

Is R2 the same thing as SP2 for W2K3? If I install SP2 on my W2K3 DC,
will
this do the same thing as running adprep?

are you trying to install/dcpromo a W2K3 R2 server?

If yes.... run ADPREP /FORESTPREP from the SECOND CD from the R2
distribution CDs

Thank You! Thank You! Yes, I have W2K3 R2 and I was running the
ADPREP
in
the i386 folder on the first CD, as instructed in the knowledgebase
article.
I tried the one buried on the second CD and it upgraded the Schema
from
version 30 to version 31 and then the new server was able to joind
the
domain. Sounds like this information needs to be added to the
knowledge
base
article on adprep. Thank you one more time for removing that brick
wall
from
in fromt of me.
