Re: DC Site Connections

Tech-Archive recommends: Speed Up your PC by fixing your registry

Thanks for the quick response Paul! You truely are an MVP!

The technet AD design documents seemed a little weak to me. I've heard of
hub and spoke designs in news groups and posts but didn't see it described in
technet anywhere. Some of the documentation mentioned connections between
DCs and I can see the connections 'to' and 'from' the DCs.

Some docs implied that the connections would get built automatically? Is
this true or should I define the connections explicitly?

Here is what I usually do:

1) Open Up Sites and Services
2) Create each site
3) Open up IP within the Inter-Site Transports container
4) Right click on IP and select New Site link
5) Give it a good name
a) I have a hub name and a spoke name standard
i) Miami_Dallas
ii) Miami_NewYork
iii) Miami_Atlanta
b) assign the sites associated with the site link
6) Go back and change the rep schedule as you would like as well as the
cost, but if you have a hub and spoke the cost shouldn't enter into the
equation

I am working on an Active Directory design for a small compay that has a
central office with four satellite offices spread all over the country.
The
sites are currently connected via VPN tunnels. I am planning on creating a
site for each of the offices, assigning subnets to those sites, and
placing a
DC with a copy of the GC at each site.

That part seemed pretty straight forward. The part that is causing some
confusion for me is the site connections. Should I simply add a site
connection from each satellite office DC to the central office DC and then
connections from the central office DC out to each satellite office DC?

Some documentation seems to hint the the KCC will look at the sites,
subnets, and servers and build it's own connections and other
documentation
seems to suggest you manually make these connections? Can anyone provide
any
help on some best practices for setting up a single forest, single domain,
AD
that is spread out over many physical locations (sites) over low speed VPN
links?

Thanks in advance,
Justin.Fisher
