Network Places relies on the browser service, which intern relies on NetBIOS. For Browsing accross subnets you need Wins configured. Just google for it and you'll get lots of info.

It somewhat answers my question, but not entirely. For example, what happens
in a domain environment?
Does every computer in a subnet appear to other computers in the subnet as
long it has File/Printer sharing activated?
What dependencies does it have in WINS or DNS?
Do they need to have shared resources?
