These are domain joined clients?
And the dialogue box presented both times is the one generated by MSGINA?

If you enable logon failure auditing on the local security policy, do you see any events in the Windows Security event log?

very simple:

The Windows XP Logon Screen appears. The user enters his password an clicks
OK.
Instead of showing up with the user environment(Desktop..) the Logon-Screen
appears again and the user has to enter his password again.
